Edward Abbott Ravenscroft is an Abbott Laboratories shareholder who enjoys hiking in scenic parks throughout the South. With a longstanding interest in regional native cultures, Edward Abbott Ravenscroft has read extensively on tribes such as the Chickasaw, Navajo, Apache, and Seminole. Indigenous to what is now Florida, the Seminole are thought to have settled in the area approximately 10,000 years ago.
The Seminoles fished and hunted along the wildlife-rich Florida coast. The subtropical warmth of the area meant that their homes were built of simple poles and thatched roofs. Except for their adoption of brightly colored attire after the appearance of elaborately dressed Spanish explorers, they maintained their culture largely unhindered for many years. At a time when much of the Americas were being taken over by Europeans, the Seminole remained relatively cohesive as a culture until the 1730s, when the first settlers from the British Colonies ventured south. Many Seminoles ultimately migrated to the Tampa Bay Area, where they still have a significant presence.
